USB type C for OnePlus 2, OnePlus confirms. OnePlus on Monday announced it’s going to lead the charge of USB Type-C adoption when the OnePlus 2 hits later this year.
USB Type-C will be supported by Android M for charging smartphones and Google says more phone and Chromebooks will have support for the all-in-one connector. It’s very possible that the OnePlus 2 will be one of the first, if not the very first, smartphone to be sold to the public with a USB-Type C port.
On Twitter, the company plainly states that it wants to be the first flagship smartphone with the technology; the news follows up on a reveal from last week that said the flagship will also sport a Snapdragon 810 processor. We’ve seen minimal USB Type-C adoption thus far, with the new MacBook and Chromebook Pixel being among early adopters. OnePlus will be the first company to implement USB Type C into a Smartphone.
It’s a bold move from a company that will be under the microscope when its second device hits. We already know the OnePlus 2 won’t be quite as affordable as the OnePlus One, so it will need to dazzle in other ways. A Snapdragon and USB Type-C connector is a good start. What else does the OnePlus 2 have in store?
Its main claim to fame is the fact that it’s reversible, so it doesn’t matter which side of the cable is up. That should remove a major pain point from previous USB connectors. USB Type-C is also small enough that it can be used on phones, so we expect it to be featured in many more handsets in the future.
